Sir Neville Poole (died 1661) was an English politician who lived a long time ago. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, between 1614 and 1648. He supported the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War. This means he was on the side that wanted Parliament to have more power, not the King.

Early Life and Family

Neville Poole was the son of Sir Henry Poole and Griselda Neville. His father was from places called Cirencester and Oaksey. His mother was the daughter of Edward Nevill, who was a Baron.

Neville Poole started studying law at a place called Gray's Inn in London in 1611. This was a famous place for future lawyers. In 1613, he was made a knight by the King. This gave him the title "Sir."

A Career in Politics

Sir Neville Poole became a Member of Parliament (MP) several times. An MP is someone chosen to represent an area in the House of Commons.

  • In 1614, he was elected MP for Malmesbury.
  • In 1624, he became MP for Cricklade.
  • In 1626, he was elected MP for Cirencester.

Besides being an MP, he also held other important jobs. In 1636, he was the High Sheriff of Wiltshire. This was a very important local official who helped keep law and order.

During the English Civil War

The 1640s were a time of big changes in England, with the start of the English Civil War. Sir Neville Poole continued his political work during this time.

  • In April 1640, he was elected MP for Malmesbury again. This Parliament was called the Short Parliament.
  • Later that year, in November 1640, he was re-elected for the Long Parliament. He stayed an MP until 1648.

He was a strong supporter of Parliament. He became a Deputy Lieutenant for Wiltshire. This meant he helped organize the local military for Parliament. In 1642, he even put together his own group of soldiers to fight for Parliament.

Sir Neville Poole was also involved in important events during the war. In 1642, he helped stop the King's soldiers, known as Royalists, near Marlborough. He was also made a commissioner in 1643. This job involved taking control of property from people who supported the King.

Land and Family

Sir Neville Poole lived in a place called Oaksey, in Wiltshire. He also owned land and was the "lord of the manor" in South Cerney for a while. He later sold this land to another important person, Sir Edward Atkyns.

He was married to Frances Poole. Her father was also named Sir Henry Poole. Sir Neville Poole had a son named Edward Poole. Edward also became a Member of Parliament, just like his father.
