Edward Henry Rich (born January 1698 – died 16 August 1721) was an important English nobleman. He held several titles, including the 9th Baron Rich, 7th Earl of Warwick, and 4th Earl of Holland. He lived at Holland House in Kensington, Middlesex. From 1701, he was known as Lord Rich. He is most remembered as the stepson of the famous writer Joseph Addison.
Early Life and Family
Edward Henry Rich was the only son of Edward Rich, 6th Earl of Warwick. His mother was Charlotte Myddelton. After his father passed away, his mother Charlotte married the writer Joseph Addison in 1716. Joseph Addison had actually been Edward's tutor before marrying his mother.
Edward and his stepfather, Joseph Addison, sometimes had disagreements. There is a well-known story that they did not see each other for many years. Later, when Addison was very ill, he asked Edward to visit him.
A Royal Role
In 1718, Edward Henry Rich was given an important job. He became a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to George, Prince of Wales. This meant he was a personal attendant to the future king. The next year, on 19 May 1719, he became a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King George I.
Different Views of His Character
Edward Henry Rich died at a young age. Because of this, it is hard to fully understand his personality. Even during his short life, people had different ideas about him.
Some people thought he was not very responsible. They believed he caused his stepfather, Joseph Addison, a lot of worry. However, others saw him differently. They described him as a very studious and intelligent young man. His friends and family loved him very much.
For example, Thomas Tickell, a close friend of Joseph Addison, wrote a special poem after Addison's death. He dedicated this poem to Edward Henry Rich. This suggests that Edward was truly sad about his stepfather's passing.
His Passing
Edward Henry Rich passed away in 1721. After his death, his cousin, Edward Rich, inherited his titles.
