Edward Rye's Homes

Edward Rye lived in a place called Aston, which is near Sheffield. His house there, Aston Hall, has been rebuilt since his time.

He also owned a house in the Frenchgate area of Doncaster. This house was special because it had his family's coat of arms on the ceiling. He also owned another property in Doncaster called the White Hart. Edward Rye's wife, Maud Wentworth, passed away in 1606.

A Royal Visitor

In June 1603, Edward Rye had a very important guest: Anne of Denmark. She was the wife of King James VI and I of England and Scotland.

Queen Anne was traveling from Scotland to Windsor Castle. She had already visited King's Manor in York and Grimston Park. Her journey was part of the Union of the Crowns, when King James became king of both Scotland and England. She traveled with her children, Prince Henry and Princess Elizabeth.

King James had passed through Doncaster earlier, in April 1603. He stayed a night at an inn called the Sign of the Sun and Bear. This inn was likely in Baxter Gate and was later renamed "The Angel."

A Queen's Thanks

About a year later, Queen Anne remembered Edward Rye's kindness. She wrote a letter to Sir Robert Cecil, a powerful government official. In her letter, she asked Sir Robert to help Edward Rye with a legal problem. Edward Rye was having a dispute with Conyers Darcy, 7th Baron Darcy de Knayth, who was also known as the "Lord Darcie of the North." Lord Darcy owned the Aston property where Edward Rye lived.

Family Life

Some old family records suggest that Edward Rye might have died in 1602. However, we know that his daughter, Frances, got married to John Everard in Doncaster in 1607. This suggests he was alive after 1602.
