Edward Shuter (born around 1728, died in 1776) was a famous English actor. He was well-known for his funny performances on stage during the 1700s.
His Life as an Actor
Edward Shuter was born in London to parents who didn't have much money. He started his acting career quite young.
His first time performing on a London stage was in 1745. He appeared in a play called Schoolboy by Colley Cibber. Edward Shuter became very good at playing older characters. He was especially known for making these roles funny and memorable.
He created some very famous characters in popular plays of his time:
- He was the first actor to play Justice Woodcock in the play Love in a Village (in 1762).
- He also played Hardcastle in She Stoops to Conquer (in 1773).
- Another well-known role was Sir Anthony Absolute in The Rivals (in 1775).
Edward Shuter was buried in St. Paul's Church in Covent Garden, London.
Famous Paintings of Shuter
Because he was such a well-known actor, Edward Shuter was featured in several paintings. One painting shows him as the character Scapin. This painting is part of the Mathews collection at the Garrick Club. Another famous painting of him was done by an artist named Zoffany. This painting was later made into an engraving by Finlayson.
