The Edward Waldo House is a special old home located at 96 Waldo Road in Scotland, Connecticut. It was built around 1715, making it a very old and well-kept example of homes from the colonial times. What's really cool is that the same family lived in this house for more than 250 years! In 1978, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site. Today, it's a historic house museum run by the local historical society.

What Does the Edward Waldo House Look Like?

The Edward Waldo House is in the southern part of Scotland, Connecticut. It sits on the north side of Waldo Road. This road also acts as the border with a town called Sprague. The property is about 12 acres big and even stretches across the road into Sprague.

House Style and Features

The house is a two-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a large chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards. The front of the house has five sections, with windows placed evenly around the main door.

The front door is simple but nice. It has a small decorative frame above it. The windows on the second floor are smaller than the ones downstairs. They are placed very close to the roof's edge. At the back of the house, there are several parts that were added later.

Inside the house, you can still see many original features. There's a special built-in cabinet in one of the living rooms. The floors have wide wooden boards, which was common long ago. The staircase in the entrance hall is also paneled with wood.

The History of the Waldo Family Home

The Edward Waldo House was built around 1715 by Edward Waldo himself. He bought the land for the house back in 1702. Edward Waldo was a farmer and also a leader in the local church. He and his wife, Thankful, had ten children!

Generations of the Waldo Family

This house was the very first one built in what is now Scotland, Connecticut. Back then, this area was part of Windham. Six different generations of the Waldo family lived in this house. That's a lot of history under one roof!

Some famous people came from the Waldo family who lived here. One was Daniel Waldo, who served as a Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives. Another was Samuel Lovett Waldo, a talented artist who painted portraits.

Becoming a Museum

In 1975, the house was given to the Scotland Historical Society. It was donated by Ruth Fanshaw Waldo, who was the last Waldo family member to live there. She even left all the furniture and items inside the house! The historical society has since turned the house into a museum. This way, everyone can visit and learn about what life was like long ago.
