The Edward Waldo House is a really old and important house in Scotland, Connecticut. It was built around 1715. This house is a great example of homes from the colonial times. What's super cool is that one family, the Waldos, lived here for over 250 years!

Today, the Edward Waldo House is a historic house museum. This means you can visit it and learn about life long ago. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This list includes buildings that are very important to American history. The local historical society now owns and takes care of the house.

What is the Edward Waldo House Like?

The Edward Waldo House is located in the southern part of Scotland, Connecticut. It sits on the north side of Waldo Road. The property is about 12 acres large. Part of it even goes into the nearby town of Sprague.

The house itself is made of wood. It has two stories and a pointed roof. A large chimney stands in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with clapboards. The front of the house has five windows and a door in the center. The door has simple decorations above it. The windows on the second floor are a bit smaller. They are also placed right under the roof's edge.

Inside, the house still has many original features. You can see a special cabinet built into one of the rooms. The floors have wide wooden boards. There is also a fancy staircase in the entrance hall.

Who Built This Historic Home?

The Edward Waldo House was built around 1715. It was built by Edward Waldo himself. He bought the land for the house in 1702. Edward Waldo was a farmer. He was also a deacon at the Congregational church in Scotland.

Edward and his wife, Thankful (who was born Thankful Dimock), had ten children. Many of their family members lived in this house over the years. Some of Edward Waldo's descendants became famous. One was Daniel Waldo, who served as a Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives. Another was Samuel Lovett Waldo, a well-known portrait artist.

A Family Home for Many Generations

The Waldo house was actually the very first house built in what is now Scotland. Back then, this area was part of Windham. Six different generations of the Waldo family lived in this house. They called it home for a very long time.

In 1971, the Waldo family gave the house to the Scotland Historical Society. They even gave the house with all its original furniture and items inside! The historical society then turned the house into the museum you can visit today. This helps everyone learn about the past.
