Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Edward Weston (born in 1566, died in 1635) was an English priest who followed the Roman Catholic faith. He was also known for writing about religious arguments and beliefs.

Early Life and Education

Edward Weston was born in London in 1566. His father, William Weston, studied at Lincoln College, Oxford and later became a lawyer. Edward's mother was the daughter of John Story. Edward started studying at Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1579. He spent at least five years there, learning from a teacher named John Case.

Because his parents were Catholic, they sent him to France to continue his education. For a short time, he studied at the English College in Reims.

Becoming a Priest

In 1585, Edward Weston moved to the English College, Rome. He spent six years there, studying important subjects like philosophy and theology. During this time, he became a priest. He also earned a special degree called a Doctor of Divinity from the university in Monreale.

After his studies, he returned to Reims in 1592. There, he began teaching about religious questions and moral choices. In 1593, his college moved to Douai, where he taught theology for about ten years. Later, he went back to England for a short time as a missionary, returning to Douai in 1612.

Edward Weston kept in touch with an important religious leader named Cardinal Robert Bellarmine, who shared similar ideas about politics and religion. In 1617, he left Douai. Later, he became a canon (a type of priest) at the church of St. Mary in Bruges. He passed away there in 1635.

His Writings

Edward Weston wrote several books, mostly about his religious beliefs and defending the Catholic faith. Some of his works include:

  • ‘De triplici Hominis Officio’ (1602)
  • ‘Juris Pontificii Sanctuarium’ (1613)
