About Edward van de Vendel
Early Life and Teaching
Edward van de Vendel was born in a town called Leerdam in the Netherlands. Before he became a full-time writer, he worked as a teacher for several years. This experience likely helped him understand what young readers enjoy. In 2001, he decided to focus completely on writing.
Becoming a Writer
Edward van de Vendel started his writing journey with poetry. His first book of poems, called Betrap me, came out in 1996. This was the beginning of his successful career.
In 2001, he wrote a special book called Wat rijmt er op puree?. This book was chosen as the Kinderboekenweekgeschenk for the annual Boekenweek (Dutch Book Week). This is a big honor in the Netherlands.
Award-Winning Books
Edward van de Vendel has won many important awards for his books. In 2004, he won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs for his book Superguppie. He shared this award with the illustrator, Fleur van der Weel. This prize is given to the best Dutch children's book of the year.
He won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs again in 2016. This time, it was for his book Stem op de okapi, which he created with illustrator Martijn van der Linden. These awards show how much his stories are loved and respected.
