Edwin Deacon (Ted) Etherington (born December 25, 1924 – died January 8, 2001) was an American writer, lawyer, and a champion for civil rights. He led important organizations like the American Stock Exchange and Wesleyan University.

Biography

Edwin Etherington was born in Bayonne, New Jersey. He served in the Army during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Wesleyan in 1948. He earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing. Later, he attended Yale University Law School and became a lawyer in 1952.

As a lawyer, he focused on banking and brokerage. He then worked at the New York Stock Exchange. There, he became a vice-president.

In 1962, the American Stock Exchange chose Etherington as its president. The exchange had faced some challenges. Etherington helped improve things. He also worked to create more opportunities for minorities and women.

In 1967, he became the president of Wesleyan University. During his time there, he helped more minority students enroll. He also brought back coeducation, meaning both boys and girls could attend. Etherington helped create the university's Center for African American Studies. He also helped start the Center for the Arts. A scholarship program for students from Connecticut community colleges is named after him.

In 1970, Etherington left Wesleyan. He ran for the United States Senate as a Republican in Connecticut. He was not elected. President Richard Nixon then asked him to lead the National Center for Voluntary Action.
