Effie Robinson (born January 7, 1920 – died May 23, 2003) was an important American social worker. She also directed public housing programs. She made history as the first African American to graduate from the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare.

Early Life and Education
Effie Robinson was born in Healdsburg, California, on January 7, 1920. She was a very bright student. In 1943, she graduated with high honors from San Francisco State University. She then went on to study at the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare. There, she achieved a major milestone. Effie Robinson became the first African American to graduate from that school. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a sorority for college women.
Helping Families and Communities
In 1945, Effie Robinson started working for the Family Service Agency of San Francisco. This organization helps families with different challenges. Her first role was as a supervisor, guiding others who worked directly with families. By 1956, her leadership skills were clear. She was chosen to be the Executive Director of the agency. This meant she was in charge of the entire organization.
Leading in Public Housing
Effie Robinson also played a key role in public housing. In 1964, the mayor of San Francisco, John F. Shelley, appointed her to a big job. She became the Director of Human Relations and Tenant Services for the San Francisco Housing Authority. This agency manages homes for people who need affordable places to live. Effie's job was to make sure residents were treated fairly. She also helped them get the services they needed. Future mayor Art Agnos even worked as her assistant during this time.
Effie Robinson passed away on May 23, 2003. She was 83 years old. She died at her home in the Cow Hollow neighborhood of San Francisco.
Honored for Her Work
Effie Robinson's important work did not go unnoticed. In 1974, she received a special award. The National Association of Social Workers gave her the Daniel Koshland Jr. Award in Social Welfare. This award recognized her outstanding contributions to helping people and improving society.
