In 1656, a man named George Hudson bought the mill. He was a haberdasher, someone who sold small sewing items like needles and thread. Later, in 1675, George Hudson and his partner leased the mill to Richard Webb. Richard Webb was a clothier, meaning he made and sold cloth.
The Webb family owned Egypt Mill for a long time, until 1832. After them, it was sold to a company called Playne & Smith.
Changing Jobs for the Mill
As time went on, Egypt Mill was used for different things. In the late 1800s, it became a dyeworks. This is where fabrics were colored using dyes.
Later, the mill was used for grinding corn and animal feed. This means it helped turn grains into food for both people and farm animals. A company called G.H. King & Sons ran this part of the business.
