What the Song is About
This song tells the story of a llama and his friend Schnappi. The llama travels all the way to Yokohama, a city in Japan. When he gets there, he has trouble eating with chopsticks. He keeps asking, "Where is the fork?"
The llama and Schnappi try many silly things with their chopsticks. But soon, the llama watches some geisha (Japanese entertainers) eating. He learns how to use chopsticks by watching them. After that, he becomes a "chopstick superstar"!
How the Song Was Made and Its Success
The words for "Ein Lama in Yokohama" were written by Rosita Blissenbach. The music was created by Iris Gruttmann. Just like the first Schnappi song, this one was sung by Joy Gruttmann. Another animated character, Das Lama, is also featured in the song. The music video for the song is an animated cartoon.
The song became popular in many countries in Europe. However, it wasn't as big a hit as Schnappi's first song, "Schnappi, Das Kleine Krokodil". In Germany, "Ein Lama in Yokohama" reached number 6 on the music charts. It also reached number 6 in Austria and stayed in the top ten for five weeks.
The song was also popular in Norway, staying in the top ten for nine weeks. In New Zealand, it was on the charts for 12 weeks and reached number 11. It was also a moderate hit in Sweden and Australia.
