Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Einion ap Cunedda (born around 440 AD – died 500 AD), also known as Einion Yrth (which means "the Impetuous" in Welsh), was an important early king of Gwynedd. Gwynedd was a powerful kingdom in what is now North Wales. Many later rulers of North Wales looked back to Einion as one of their first and most important ancestors.

Einion was one of the sons of a famous leader named Cunedda. In the early 450s, Einion traveled with his father to North Wales. Their mission was to remove Irish raiders who were causing trouble in the area.

After his father Cunedda passed away, Einion became the ruler of Gwynedd. This kingdom was quite new at the time. Einion worked hard to make his family's rule stronger in the region. He got help from his brother, Ceredig, who ruled a nearby area called Ceredigion. His nephew, Meirion, who ruled Meirionnydd, also helped him. Together, they built on the successes of Einion's father.

Einion had two sons who later became rulers themselves: Cadwallon Lawhir and Owain Ddantgwyn.
