Who Was Dwight D. Eisenhower?
Dwight D. Eisenhower was a very important person in American history. He graduated from West Point in 1915. His class was so famous, it was called "The Class the Stars Fell On".
Eisenhower's Role in World War II
Eisenhower became a top Army officer during World War II. He was the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. This meant he was in charge of all the Allied forces in Europe. He led many big operations, including the D-Day landings.
From General to President
After the war, Eisenhower continued his service. He became the Army's Chief of Staff. This is a very high position in the military. Later, in 1952, he was elected President of the United States. He served two terms as president.
About the Eisenhower Monument
The Eisenhower Monument is a large and impressive statue. It stands nine feet tall, which is about as tall as a basketball hoop. The statue is placed on a base made of red granite.
Who Designed the Statue?
The monument was designed by Robert L. Dean Jr. He was also a graduate of West Point, from the class of 1953. Eisenhower's son even offered Dean one of his father's actual uniforms to help with the design.
How Was the Statue Made?
Dean first created a wax model of the statue at his home. Then, the large bronze statue was cast in Italy. The monument was officially shown to the public on May 3, 1983. It stands as a lasting tribute to a remarkable leader.
