Elías Tormo y Monzó (1869–1957) was an important Spanish art historian. He spent his life studying and teaching about art, especially from Spain's past. He also worked in the government, helping to shape education and fine arts in his country.
Life and Work
Elías Tormo was born in Albaida, a town in Valencia, Spain, on June 23, 1869. He studied Law in Valencia and Arts in Madrid. After finishing his studies, he became a professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
In 1903, Tormo moved to Madrid. He started teaching at the Universidad Central, which is now called the Complutense University of Madrid. This was a big deal because it was the first time a university in Spain had a professor specifically for Art History. Later, he even became the head, or "rector," of the university.
Tormo was very active in the world of art and history. He helped start a journal called Archivo Español de Arte y Arqueología. This journal was a place for scholars to share their research on Spanish art and old artifacts. He was also a member of important groups like the Real Academia de la Historia (Royal Academy of History) and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Royal Academy of Fine Arts).
Besides his academic work, Elías Tormo also served in public office. He was a "parliamentarian," which means he was a member of the Spanish parliament, helping to make laws for the country. He served in this role for many years. He also held a very important position as the Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts from 1930 to 1931. In this job, he was in charge of education and promoting art and culture across Spain.
In 1924, he helped design a new version of the Coat of arms of Spain. This was a special symbol used by the Spanish royal family and the government.
Elías Tormo passed away in Madrid on December 21, 1957. He left behind a legacy of important work in art history and public service.
