El-ghe facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

El-ghe (Ꙥ ꙥ) is a special letter that was once part of the Cyrillic writing system. You might not see it very often today, but it played a role in old Slavic languages.

This letter, Ꙥ, is sometimes written in English as L̃, Lj, or even Ł. It was used in some very old Old Slavonic books and papers.

What El-ghe Was Used For

In these ancient texts, the letter Ꙥ was used to show a specific sound. Imagine saying the "l" sound, but with your tongue pressed a bit more towards the roof of your mouth, almost like the "ly" sound in "million." This is called a "palatalized" sound.

El-ghe and Other Letters

The job of El-ghe was similar to another letter you might know if you've seen the Serbian or Macedonian alphabets. That letter is Lje (Љ љ). Both El-ghe and Lje were designed to represent that special palatalized "l" sound. It shows how different alphabets can have unique letters for specific sounds in their languages.
