El Berrendo, Chihuahua facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

El Berrendo is a small place in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It's located right on the border with the U.S., across from a spot called Antelope Wells, New Mexico in New Mexico. In 2010, a count showed that only one person lived there!

About El Berrendo

El Berrendo is found in the middle of the Chihuahua Desert, a very dry and sandy area. It sits quite high up, about 1,420 meters (or 4,659 feet) above sea level. That's higher than many tall buildings!

Smallest Border Crossing

This tiny town is home to the smallest border crossing along the entire US-Mexico Border. On the U.S. side, there's a special entry point. It's open every day from 8 AM to 4 PM, but only for regular people, not for big trucks carrying goods.

What's in a Name?

The name "El Berrendo" comes from the Spanish word for an animal called a pronghorn. This animal looks a lot like an antelope and is common in this region. This is also why the place across the border is called Antelope Wells!

How to Get There

You can reach El Berrendo from Federal Highway 2 in Mexico. You'll need to take a 12-kilometer (about 7.5 miles) road off the highway. Most of this road was paved by 2017, making the trip easier. On the American side, you can get there using New Mexico State Route 81, which connects Antelope Wells to a big highway called Interstate 10.
