El Caney (sometimes just called Caney) is a small village in Cuba. It is located about six kilometers (four miles) northeast of the city of Santiago. The word "Caney" comes from the Taíno language, which was spoken by the native people of the Caribbean. It means "longhouse," a type of large home where many families lived together.
History of El Caney
El Caney has an interesting history. Long ago, it was known as the place where Hernán Cortés, a famous Spanish explorer, had a special dream or message. This vision supposedly told him to spread Christianity in Mexico.
Battle of El Caney
El Caney was also the location of an important battle called the Battle of El Caney. This battle happened on July 1, 1898. It was a key event during the Spanish-American War.
