El Cercado is a small town in the Dominican Republic. It is found in the southwest part of the country, in the San Juan province. In 2010, about 20,843 people lived there.
Many people have moved from El Cercado to bigger cities like Santo Domingo. They often go to find better jobs or to study. The town's name, El Cercado, means 'the fenced-in place.' This is because it is surrounded by mountains.

History of El Cercado
The community of El Cercado was started in 1845. It was founded by the president at that time, Pedro Santana. Before it became El Cercado, it was part of another area called Bánica. It was known as Sabana del Bohío.
Later, in 1888, President Fernando Arturo de Meriño made it an official town. The first families to live in this area included Florencio Montero, Telésforo de Oleo, and the Matos and Brito families.
What is the Economy of El Cercado Like?
The main ways people make a living in El Cercado are through farming and trade. Farmers grow many different crops. These include beans, pigeon peas, onions, and avocados. They also grow oranges, corn, rice, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and coffee. Other fruits and vegetables are grown here too.
Many people in El Cercado have jobs. About 7,845 people are part of the working population. Most of them, about 74%, have jobs. Some people, around 9%, work for the government. El Cercado is known as one of the most important towns in the San Juan province.
