About El Lencero Airport
Xalapa National Airport is about six miles east of Xalapa. It is located near the road that goes from Xalapa to Veracruz. There is also a small lagoon to its northwest.
About four miles south of the airport is a hill called Chavarrillo. This hill is about 4,000 feet high. The wind usually blows from the east or southeast all year. Strong winds from the north can happen from October to May. Sometimes, there is fog and low clouds, which can make flying tricky.
Runway Details
The airport has one runway, which is called 08–26. It is 1,780 meters (about 5,840 feet) long and 30 meters (about 98 feet) wide. The runway is paved with asphalt. When planes land on runway 08, they need to come down a bit more steeply than usual. This is because the ground rises towards the west.
Airport Operations
The airport's special radio frequency, called AFIS UNICOM, is 123.3 MHz. It is open for all flights from when the sun rises until it sets.
In 2013, the airport started a big project. They began to make the airport bigger and better. This included building a new runway.
Passenger Numbers
In 2016, about 3,708 passengers used Xalapa Airport. The next year, in 2017, about 760 passengers used it. These numbers come from the Direction General of Civil Aeronautics.
Important Event
On February 21, 2021, a Learjet 45XR plane had an accident. This plane belonged to the Mexican Air Force. It crashed while taking off from El Lencero Airport.
