El Pao is a town in Cojedes, a state in Venezuela. It is the main town of the Pao de San Juan Bautista Municipality. Most people in El Pao work in farming, growing crops and raising animals.
History of El Pao
El Pao was started a long time ago, in the year 1661. It was founded by a group of religious people called Franciscans. They came to the area to set up a mission and build a community.
Where is El Pao?
El Pao is located about 132 meters (or 433 feet) above sea level. This means it's not too high up in the mountains, but it's also not right by the coast.

El Pao has some very old and interesting buildings.
Old Churches
The town is home to one of the oldest churches in all of Venezuela. This church is called the Church of San Juan Bautista, and it was first built in 1661, the same year the town was founded! There is also another old church built in 1782. These churches show the history of the town.
The Pao Dam
Close to El Pao, you can find the Pao dam. A dam is a large wall built across a river to hold back water. Dams are often used to create a reservoir for drinking water or to generate electricity.
