El Viso de San Juan is a small town in Spain. It is located in the province of Toledo. This province is part of the Castile-La Mancha region. In 2018, about 4,351 people lived here.
What's in a Name?
The name "Viso" comes from an old Latin word. It means "view" or "sight." This town is called El Viso because it sits on a high spot. From here, you can see many other villages and lands around. It's like having a great lookout point!
A Look at History
El Viso de San Juan became important a long time ago. This happened when a nearby town, Villa de Olmos, lost many of its people.
Ancient Fortress
Around the 10th or 11th century, during the Umayyad Period, Muslims built a fortress here. This fortress was very important. It was a key spot on the path to the Guadarrama mountains. Today, only a small part of the tower remains. It is about 8 meters (26 feet) tall. Its walls are very thick, about 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide.
Old Buildings
In the older part of El Viso de San Juan, you can find a beautiful church. It is called Santa María Magdalena Church. This church was built in the 1600s in a style called Baroque. Not far from the church is the San Francisco hermitage. It has a bright white front.
Growing Town
In the last century, El Viso de San Juan grew a lot. In 1991, only 575 people lived there. Today, more than 4,000 people call it home. You can see this growth in the town's layout. There is an old center. Around it are many newer neighborhoods.
