Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The short story "El Celoso extremeño" (which means "The Jealous Extremaduran") is one of twelve short stories written by Miguel de Cervantes. These stories were published together in 1613 under the title Novelas Ejemplares, which translates to "Exemplary Novels." These stories were called "exemplary" because they often taught a lesson or showed a good example.

What is "The Jealous Extremaduran" About?

This story tells the tale of a man named Filipo de Carrizales. He used to be a soldier and traveled far away to "las Indias" (which was the name for parts of America, especially Peru, back then). There, he became very rich. After many years, Carrizales felt a strong desire to return to his home country, Spain. He settled in the city of Sevilla.

Carrizales's Extreme Jealousy

In Sevilla, Carrizales fell in love with a young and beautiful girl named Leonora. Even though her family was poor, they were noble, and Carrizales saw her good character. He decided he wanted to marry her and protect her. However, Carrizales was extremely jealous. He wanted to keep Leonora safe from everyone and everything outside their home.

He took many steps to make sure no other man could get close to her. He built a very secure house with strong doors. Only female servants and one trusted male attendant were allowed to enter Leonora's private rooms. Carrizales believed that by keeping her completely isolated, he was protecting her peace and happiness from the outside world. He also gave her many presents.

The Story's Ending

The story reaches a sad conclusion. Carrizales eventually discovers Leonora with another man named Loaysa. Instead of blaming them, Carrizales blames himself for his extreme jealousy and the way he treated Leonora. Feeling ashamed, he quietly leaves and soon dies.

After Carrizales's death, Leonora decides not to marry Loaysa. Instead, she chooses to join a convent, which is a place where women dedicate their lives to religious service. Loaysa, in turn, leaves Spain and goes to "las Indias" (the New World). The story shows the sad results of extreme jealousy and how it can affect many lives.
