Second Lieutenant Elaine A. Roe was a brave officer in the United States Army during World War II. She was a nurse who helped wounded soldiers. She received a very special award called the Silver Star for her actions during a battle in Italy.
A Heroic Nurse
Elaine A. Roe was one of the first women to receive the Silver Star. This award is given for showing great courage in battle. Three other nurses, Mary Roberts, Rita Rourke, and Ellen Ainsworth, also received this award. They were all recognized for their amazing bravery.
A Night of Courage
On February 10, 1944, Lieutenant Roe was working near Anzio, Italy. Her hospital, the 33rd Field Hospital, came under heavy attack. Enemy artillery shells rained down, hitting the hospital area. Two nurses were killed, and other soldiers were hurt.
The attack cut the electricity, plunging the hospital into darkness. But Lieutenant Roe and Lieutenant Rita Rourke did not panic. They used flashlights to see. They quickly began moving 42 patients to safety. They also calmed other patients who were scared.
Even with shells exploding nearby, they stayed calm and brave. They didn't think about their own safety. Their quick thinking and courage prevented a lot of confusion. They inspired the soldiers working with them. Their actions showed the best of the United States Army and the Army Nurse Corps.
Elaine A. Roe was from Whitewater, Wisconsin.
