An electric blanket ready to keep you warm.

An electric blanket is a special type of blanket that uses electricity to create warmth. It has thin wires or carbon fiber elements woven inside that heat up when plugged into an electrical outlet. This makes the blanket feel cozy and warm, perfect for cold nights.

The very first electric blanket was invented in 1912 by an American inventor named Samuel Irwin Russell. Since then, these blankets have become much safer and more common. Some modern electric blankets use "low voltage" technology, meaning they work on just 12 to 24 volts, which is a very safe amount of electricity.

How Electric Blankets Work

Electric blankets work by using a simple principle: electricity passing through a wire creates heat. Inside the blanket, there are special wires that are designed to warm up when electricity flows through them. These wires are spread out evenly so the whole blanket gets warm.

Heating Elements and Controls

The heating wires are usually made of a material that resists the flow of electricity, which causes them to heat up. Modern blankets often have a control unit that lets you choose how warm you want the blanket to be. This control unit also has safety features, like automatically turning off after a certain time or if the blanket gets too hot.

Safety Features in Modern Blankets

Today's electric blankets are designed with many safety features. They often have thermostats that prevent overheating. If a part of the blanket gets too warm, the thermostat will turn off the power to that section or the whole blanket. This helps prevent fires and ensures the blanket is safe to use.

Types of Electric Blankets

There are a few different kinds of electric blankets you might find. Each type is designed for a specific use or comfort level.

Traditional Electric Blankets

These are the most common type. They are placed over your body, usually on top of a bed sheet, to keep you warm while you sleep. They come in various sizes, just like regular blankets, from twin to king.

Electric Throws

An electric throw is a smaller version of an electric blanket. It's designed to be used on a couch or chair, perfect for snuggling up while reading or watching TV. They are usually lighter and easier to move around than full-sized blankets.

Underblankets and Mattress Pads

Some electric blankets are made to go under you, like a fitted sheet. These are called electric underblankets or heated mattress pads. They warm up the mattress from below, providing a constant warmth that rises up to your body.

Using Your Electric Blanket Safely

It's important to use electric blankets correctly to stay safe. Always follow the instructions that come with your blanket.

  • Check for Damage: Before using, always check the blanket, cord, and control for any damage. If you see frayed wires, scorch marks, or a broken plug, do not use it.
  • Keep it Flat: Make sure the blanket lies flat on your bed. Do not bunch it up or fold it while it's turned on, as this can cause heat to build up in one spot.
  • No Sharp Objects: Avoid using sharp objects on the blanket, as they could damage the heating wires inside.
  • Don't Overheat: Use the lowest setting that keeps you comfortable. Turning it up too high for too long can be unsafe.
  • Unplug When Not Using: Always unplug your electric blanket when you are not using it, especially before leaving the house or going to sleep.
  • Pets and Liquids: Keep pets away from electric blankets, as their claws or teeth could damage the wires. Also, avoid spilling liquids on the blanket.

Care and Maintenance

Taking good care of your electric blanket will help it last longer and stay safe.

  • Washing: Most modern electric blankets can be machine washed. Always check the care label for specific instructions. Make sure to remove the control unit and dry the blanket completely before using it again.
  • Storage: When not in use, store your electric blanket loosely rolled or folded in a cool, dry place. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of it, as this can damage the internal wires.
  • Replacement: Electric blankets don't last forever. If your blanket is very old (more than 10 years) or shows signs of wear, it's a good idea to replace it with a new one.
