Elena Jordi, whose real name was Montserrat Casals Baque, was born on November 20, 1882, and passed away on December 6, 1945. She made history as the first woman in Spain to become a film director. Before directing movies, she was a talented actress and a popular stage performer.
Early Life
Elena Jordi was born in a place called Cercs. She was the second of three sisters. Her father worked as a miner and also took care of cement factories in Cercs. When she turned 18, she joined a local cultural group.
Her Career
Elena Jordi started her career as an actress. She performed in many stage shows, which were like variety shows with different acts. She even created her own theater company. She became very well known in Barcelona for her acting skills.
She performed at the Teatro Español de Barcelona, a famous theater. An actor named Domenec Ceret encouraged her to try acting in movies. Her first movie was La loca del Ministerio. In 1914, she tried to open her own theater called Teatro Elena Jordi, but it did not succeed.
Elena Jordi is most famous for being the first female film director in Spain. She directed a movie called Thais in 1918. This was a big step for women in filmmaking!
Personal Life
In 1901, Elena Jordi married Josep Capellera, who was a veterinarian. They had two daughters together. Their marriage ended in 1904.
