Eleni Lambiri (born February 9, 1889 – died March 30, 1960) was a very important Greek musician. She was known for being both a conductor and a composer. This means she wrote music and also led orchestras.

Who Was Eleni Lambiri?

Eleni Lambiri was born in Athens, Greece. Her family was very artistic! Her father, Georgios Lambiris, was also a composer. Her grandfather, Andreas Laskaratos, was a famous poet. It seems creativity ran in her family.

Her Early Musical Training

Eleni started studying music at the Athens Conservatory. This was a big deal because she was the very first woman to study composition there! She learned how to write music from 1907 to 1908. Because of this, she earned the special title of being the first Greek woman composer.

After her studies in Athens, Eleni traveled to Leipzig, Germany. She continued her musical education at the Royal Conservatory of Leipzig. From 1908 to 1911, she studied composition with Max Reger. She also learned how to conduct orchestras from Hans Scheidt. She finished her studies in Leipzig in 1911.

Eleni's Career as a Musician

After finishing her studies, Eleni Lambiri moved to Milan, Italy. There, she worked as a conductor, leading musical performances.

In 1913, one of her early works was performed. It was an operetta called To apokriatiko oneiro, which means A Dream in Carnival. An operetta is like a short opera, often with spoken dialogue and lighter music. The story for this operetta was written by Gregorios Xenopoulos.

A few years later, in 1915, Eleni created another operetta. This one was called Isolma. What's special about Isolma is that Eleni wrote both the music and the story herself! This operetta was even recorded in 1958.

Around 1925, Eleni returned to Greece. She moved to Patras, where she became the director of the Patras Conservatory. She held this important position until 1953. While working there, she also wrote music reviews for a local newspaper called Neologos Patron. She passed away in Athens in 1960.
