Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elepuʻukahonua (also known as Olepuʻukahonua) was an important leader, called a High Chief, on the island of Oahu in ancient Hawaii. He ruled over Oʻahu many centuries ago. His story is found in old Hawaiian chants and legends, which are like historical records passed down through generations.

Who Was Elepuʻukahonua?

Elepuʻukahonua was a significant figure in the history of Oʻahu. He was part of a powerful family line that included many chiefs. His rule helped shape the early history of the island.

His Family Background

Elepuʻukahonua's father was Chief Kumuhonua of Oʻahu. Kumuhonua was the son of Chief Mulielealiʻi. This family line was connected to Maweke, who was known as a wizard from Tahiti. The name of Elepuʻukahonua's mother is not known today.

Becoming a Ruler

After his father, Kumuhonua, passed away, Elepuʻukahonua became the new ruler of Oʻahu. He was the eldest of four brothers, which likely meant he was chosen to take over his father's position as chief. This was a common way for leadership to be passed down in ancient Hawaiian society.

His Family and Legacy

Chief Elepuʻukahonua married a woman named Hikilena. We don't know who her parents were. Together, Elepuʻukahonua and Hikilena had a son named Kahokupohakano. Kahokupohakano later had a son named Nawele with his wife Kaumana II. Nawele eventually became a ruler of Oʻahu himself, continuing the family's leadership.
