Eleutherodactylus gundlachi is a type of frog that belongs to the family Eleutherodactylidae. This frog lives only in southeastern Cuba. It is named after Johannes Christoph Gundlach, who was a German zoologist. People sometimes call it the Turquino spiny frog or Gundlach's robber frog.

What Does the Gundlach's Robber Frog Look Like?

Adult Gundlach's robber frogs are quite small. They can grow up to about 25 mm (1.0 in) long. This measurement is from their snout (nose) to their vent (bottom). Their head is usually about as wide as their body, or sometimes a little narrower.

The skin on their back has many tiny bumps. These bumps are called granules and tubercles. You might also see a clear W-shaped fold of skin on their shoulders. This is called a suprascapular fold. Their fingers and toes have small, round pads, which are called discs.

These frogs are often dark brown or greenish-brown. Some have a solid color, while others have irregular spots. Some frogs might have clear stripes along their sides. Others have two round spots in the middle of their back. Their belly can be white, pink, or yellowish. The throat might be white or have a brown net-like pattern. Their legs often have dark bands.

Where Do These Frogs Live and How Are They Protected?

The Eleutherodactylus gundlachi frog lives in dense, moist forests. You can find them at high places, from about 650–1,375 m (2,133–4,511 ft) or 200–1,970 m (660–6,460 ft) above sea level. They are land animals, meaning they live on the ground. Male frogs make calls from the ground to attract mates.

These frogs have a special way of developing. Their babies do not go through a tadpole stage in water. Instead, they develop directly into tiny frogs from eggs. This is called direct development.

This frog species is common in areas where it can find good habitat. However, the places where it can live are limited. The biggest threat to these frogs is when their homes are destroyed. This happens because of farming, cutting down trees for wood, and tourist activities. Building new roads or buildings also harms their habitat.

These frogs live in several protected areas. But many of these areas are not managed well enough to fully protect the frogs.
