The cliff robber frog, also known as the Cuban bromeliad frog, is a type of frog found only in Cuba. Its scientific name is Eleutherodactylus varians. It lives in the middle and eastern parts of Cuba's main island, and also on a smaller island called Isla de Juventud. Sometimes, two other frog types, Eleutherodactylus olibrus and Eleutherodactylus staurometopon, are considered to be very close relatives or even a part of this species.
What Does It Look Like?
The Eleutherodactylus varians frog can grow to about 29 mm (1.1 in) long. This measurement is taken from its nose to its rear end, called its snout–vent length. Its head is wider than it is long, and its body is a bit flattened.
These frogs have special discs on their finger and toe tips. They can also change their skin color! Their back, called the dorsum, can be silvery gray, yellowish brown, or even dark brown. It often has clear spots. Male frogs have a vocal sac (a pouch under their chin that inflates when they call). This sac is usually yellow, but it can also be white.
Where Does It Live and How Is It Protected?
The Eleutherodactylus varians frog lives in moist forests. You can find them at elevations below 845 m (2,772 ft). They are tree-dwelling animals, meaning they spend their lives in trees. You might even spot them living inside bromeliad plants!
Male frogs make calls from tree branches and leaves to attract mates. The female frogs lay their eggs inside bromeliad plants. These frogs have a special way of developing: their eggs hatch directly into tiny frogs, skipping the tadpole stage completely.
This frog species is quite common in places where its habitat is suitable. However, it is threatened by habitat loss. This happens because forests are cleared for farming. Luckily, these frogs live in several protected areas. But these areas need better care and management to keep the frogs safe.
