Elgy Sibley Johnson (born November 8, 1912 – died March 12, 1987) was a very talented mathematician and a dedicated professor. He taught at the University of the District of Columbia. He worked there from when the school first opened in 1976 until he retired in 1983. Before that, he was the acting president of Federal City College from 1972 to 1974. He also led the mathematics department there.
His Journey in Education
Elgy S. Johnson worked hard to get a great education. He graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. After that, he earned his master's degree in mathematical statistics from the University of Michigan. This degree focused on using math to understand data and probabilities.
He didn't stop there! He also earned a law degree from Catholic University. Later, he received his highest degree, a doctorate (Ph.D.), in mathematics from Catholic University. His special research for his doctorate was about "Properties of solutions of nonlinear differential equations." This was a complex topic in advanced math.
Elgy S. Johnson made history by becoming the 25th African American to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics. This was a big achievement at the time. He was also a member of the Mu Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, which is a social and service organization.
Personal Life
Elgy S. Johnson was married to Lola Craft. They later divorced. In 1984, he married Bernice Johnson.
