The Eli Morse Farm is a historic farm located on Lake Road in Dublin, New Hampshire. It is one of the very first places settled in the town. Eli Morse started the farm in 1764. What's special is that only two families have owned this farm throughout its long history. It was also one of the first farms in the Dublin Pond area to become a summer vacation spot. The Eli Morse Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.

About the Eli Morse Farm Property

The Eli Morse Farm is found on the south side of Lake Road. It stretches south from where Dublin Pond's water flows out at its southwest corner. The property is quite large, covering more than 200 acres (about 81 hectares). This land includes both open fields and wooded areas.

The Historic Farmhouse and Buildings

The main house on the farm is a big brick building. It was built around 1822 by Eli Morse's son, Thaddeus. The house is designed in the Federal style, which was popular for buildings in the United States during the late 1700s and early 1800s. In 1886, some parts were added to the house, including a porch and a front entrance area. The farm also has several other important buildings. These include a barn, a grist mill (which grinds grain), and a few small cottages.

History of the Eli Morse Farm

This land was first settled in 1764 by Eli Morse. He was one of the first people to live permanently in Dublin, New Hampshire. Eli Morse was an important person in the early community. He worked as a clerk, keeping valuable records of Dublin's first years.

The Morse Family's Role in Dublin

Eli Morse's son, Thaddeus, built the main house on the farm. Thaddeus was also very involved in local government. He served as a town selectman and held other important jobs. His son, Thaddeus Jr., decided to open the house to summer guests in 1857. This was one of the first times a farm near Dublin Pond was used as a place for people to stay during their summer vacations.

Later Owners and Important Events

After the Morse family, Thaddeus Jr.'s heirs sold the property to Mrs. Sarah Peele. Her family's descendants have owned the farm ever since. The farm is also famous because it was the summer home of Grenville Clark. He was a lawyer and diplomat from New York City. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in talks with other countries. Grenville Clark became the owner after marrying one of Sarah Peele's granddaughters.

In 1945, Grenville Clark organized a special peace conference right at the Eli Morse Farm. During this meeting, people wrote the Dublin Declaration. This important document called for the United Nations to be created as a way for countries to work together for world peace. The Clark family still owns the property today. They use it for farming and to help protect nature.
