Elihu Bailey was born on December 15, 1817, in a place called Warren Township, Belmont County, Ohio. When he was older, in 1856, he moved to Marshall, Richland County, Wisconsin. Besides his political work, he was also a preacher for the Methodist Episcopal Church and a teacher.
Elihu Bailey's Work in Politics
Elihu Bailey was a member of the Republican Party. This is one of the main political groups in the United States. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly during several years: 1861, 1871, 1877, and 1879.
Besides being a state lawmaker, Elihu Bailey also held other important jobs. He was the Chairman of Marshall, which is similar to being the Mayor of a town. He also worked as a justice of the peace. A justice of the peace is a local official who handles small legal matters.
In 1860, he tried to become the Clerk of Richland County, Wisconsin. Before moving to Wisconsin, he had also run for office in Ohio. He was a candidate for the Ohio General Assembly many times as a member of the Liberty Party. This was another political group he belonged to earlier in his life.
