What is the Elijah Kellogg House?
The Elijah Kellogg House is located on Barton Lane. This is a private road in Harpswell Center. The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It is shaped like the letter "L". The main part of the house is rectangular. A longer section extends out to the east.
House Design and Features
The front of the house faces south. It has two wide windows. There are special flat columns called pilasters at the corners. These columns go up to a decorative band called an entablature. Above this is a triangular gable. It has a unique diamond-shaped window in the middle.
The main entrance is at the eastern end of the longer section. It has pilasters and a small gabled roof above it. Another entrance is in the corner of the "L" shape. This entrance has a simple porch with a flat roof. Inside the house, you can still see the original Greek Revival style. This includes the wooden details and finishes.
Who was Elijah Kellogg?
Elijah Kellogg was born in Portland, Maine. He went to Bowdoin College. Later, he became a minister. The people of Harpswell asked him to lead their church. This church is now known as the Elijah Kellogg Church.
Kellogg's Life and Books
Kellogg was the pastor there from 1845 until he passed away in 1901. He also spent many years working in other places. Elijah Kellogg became well-known across the country. He wrote many adventure books for children. These stories were often based on his own childhood in Maine.
