About the Church Building
The Elijah Kellogg Church is in Harpswell Center. It stands across from the old Harpswell Meetinghouse. The church is a one-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a strong stone base.
Church Tower and Entrance
On top of the roof, there is a tall tower. This tower has several parts. The bottom part is short and made of wood. Above it is a taller section with pillars at the corners. Then comes an open bell tower. It has a fancy top supported by more pillars. A tall, pointed steeple sits on top of everything.
The main front of the church has a very special entrance. The door is set inside a curved archway. This archway has decorative windows above and next to the doors. There are also pairs of pillars at the corners of the building. These pillars go up to a triangular shape at the very top. The sides of the church have two sections. Each section has pillars and windows. These windows have arched tops.
History of the Church
The church was built in 1843. It was for a group of Congregationalist church members. This group had been around since 1753. The new church was built because of a disagreement. People argued about who owned the old meetinghouse. That building was used for both town meetings and church services.
Reverend Elijah Kellogg
The first pastor of this new church was Rev. Elijah Kellogg. He had just finished studying at Bowdoin College nearby. Kellogg was the pastor until 1854. But he always loved Harpswell. He came back to live there in 1882. He even served as pastor again from 1889 until he passed away in 1901. Rev. Kellogg is most famous for writing many popular children's books.
