The Elijah Mills House is a special old house located at 45 Deerfield Road in Windsor, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1822. This house is a great example of a brick house from the Federal period, which was a style popular in the early 1800s. Because it's so well-preserved, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's an important historical building in the United States.

Discovering the Elijah Mills House

The Elijah Mills House stands in the southern part of Windsor. You can find it on the west side of Deerfield Road. It's just north of Interstate 291.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is a two-and-a-half story building made of brick. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side gable roof. There are two brick chimneys inside the house. The front of the house has five window sections and a door in the middle. This makes it look very balanced and neat.

The windows are rectangular. They have stone sills at the bottom. Above the windows, the bricks are laid in a special way, called "soldier bricks." The front door is framed by thin wooden boards. Above the door, there's a cool, half-circle window.

On the south side of the house, there's a small wooden porch. It has a gently sloping roof. The south end of the house also has a bricked-over half-circle opening. At the back, a wooden section connects the main house to an old barn.

Inside the House

When you step inside, you'll find a central hallway. This hallway has an archway that leads to a staircase. On each side of the hall, there are two rooms. The two rooms at the front of the house have fancy fireplaces. These fireplaces have decorative mantels, which are the shelves above the fireplace opening. The house still looks much like it did when it was built. Not many changes have been made since the 1900s.

Who Built This House?

The Elijah Mills House was built around 1822 by Elijah Mills himself. His family was well-known in Windsor for running brickyards. These were places where bricks were made. This house is special because it uses bricks in unusual places. For example, even the walls and floors of the basement are made of brick! You can see similar brickwork in the Oliver W. Mills House, which is another old house nearby.

The back part of the house and the barn were changed over time. These changes allowed the attic spaces to be used as homes for farm workers. This shows how the house adapted to the needs of the people living and working there.
