This house is a great example of a brick home from a time called the Federal period. Because it's so well-preserved, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's an important historical site worth protecting.
About the Oliver W. Mills House
The Oliver W. Mills House stands in southern Windsor. You can find it on the east side of Deerfield Road. It's a two-and-a-half story building made of brick. The roof has a front-facing gable, which means it points towards the front. There are two brick chimneys inside the house.
What Does It Look Like?
The front of the house has a special triangular shape called a pediment. In the middle of this shape, there's a slightly oval fan design. The main front wall has three sections. The front door is in the section on the right. It's set in a round arch with a small window above it. The other windows are rectangular. They have sills made of brownstone. The bricks above the windows are laid in a special pattern.
A two-story brick section extends from the back of the house. This part was built at the same time as the main house. Inside, the main part of the house has three rooms and an entry hall. The kitchen is located in the back section. The staircase and the front living room have the most detailed wooden decorations. Some rooms still have their original wide floorboards. Other rooms have newer flooring over the old ones.
Who Built This Historic Home?
The Oliver W. Mills House was built around 1824. It was built by Oliver W. Mills himself. His family owned one of the brickyards in Windsor. This house is special because it uses brick in many places. For example, even the walls and floors in the basement are made of brick! You can see similar uses of brick in the Elijah Mills House, which is also nearby. Besides making bricks, Oliver W. Mills was also a very successful farmer.
