About Elisa Valero
Her School Days
Elisa Valero studied architecture at the University of Valladolid. She was a brilliant student and won an award for having the best grades when she graduated in 1996. In 2000, she earned her doctorate in architecture from the University of Granada. Later, in 2003, she received a special scholarship to study in Rome, Italy.
Her Career
In 1996, Elisa moved to Mexico to teach at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. There, she worked on her first project: helping to fix up a restaurant called Los Manantiales.
Since 1997, she has run her own architecture studio in Granada, Spain.
Since 2012, she has been a professor of Architectural Design at the University of Granada. This means she teaches students how to design buildings. She was one of the first women in Spain to become a full professor in this field!
Elisa also leads a research group that studies "Efficient Housing and Urban Recycling." They work on projects about reusing old buildings and making new ones that are good for the environment. They look for ways to build homes that cost less and use less energy.
She also researches how light works in buildings and how to design spaces for children, especially in hospitals. Since 2012, she has worked with the Aladina Foundation, which helps children with cancer.
Elisa has guided many students with their research and has written almost 200 articles and books about architecture. She is also a visiting professor at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland.

Elisa Valero has designed many different types of buildings, including:
- A new parent room and a renovated patio at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville (2019).
- Eight experimental homes in Granada (2018).
- The Church of Saint Josephine Bakhita in Playa Granada, Motril (2016).
- A children's school in the Serrallo neighborhood of Granada (2011).
- The Plácido Arango Art Gallery in Madrid (2008).
- A community center in Lancha del Genil, Granada (2006).
- Thirteen homes built by the residents themselves in Palenciana (2003).
- The San Isidro House, a special home in Granada that uses natural energy (2003).
Awards She Has Won
Elisa Valero has received many important awards for her architectural work. Some of them include:
- The Swiss Architectural Award in 2017-2018. She was the first woman ever to win this award!
- An Honorable Mention for the arcVision Prize in 2016.
- The International Mention of the Prix des femmes architectes in 2019.
- A special mention at the ASCER Ceramics Awards in 2019 for her work at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville.
- First Prize in the "Rehabilitation" category at the Tile Architecture Awards in 2018 for fixing up the Exhibition Hall of the Santo Domingo Convent in Huéscar.
- She was a finalist for the FAD Awards in 2012 for the Children's school in Granada.
- She won the "Abitare il Mediterraneo" prize in 2011.
