Elisabeth Ivanowna Epstein (1879–1956) was a talented Russian painter who lived during an exciting time for art. She was known for her connections with important artists and for helping to share new art ideas between different countries.
Early Life and Art Training
Elisabeth Ivanowna Hefter was born on February 27, 1879, in Zhytomyr, Russia. Her family later moved to Moscow. After that, Elisabeth moved to Munich, a city in Germany.
In 1898, she married Meizyslaw Epstein. They had one child together. Their marriage ended in 1911.
While in Munich, Elisabeth studied art with several famous teachers. These included Anton Ažbe, Alexej von Jawlensky, and Wassily Kandinsky. She also visited art gatherings called "salons." These were hosted by another artist, Marianne von Werefkin.
Exhibitions and Connections
Elisabeth Epstein's artwork was shown in important exhibitions. In 1911, her paintings were part of the first show by the Neue Künstlervereinigung München (New Artists' Association of Munich). This was a group of artists who wanted to try new styles.
Around 1907, Epstein moved to Paris, France. She continued to show her art there, including at the famous Salon d'Automne. This was a big art exhibition held every autumn.
While living in Paris, Elisabeth played a key role in connecting artists. She introduced Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc to the French art world. These two artists were very important in a German art group called Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Epstein also helped include the work of French painter Robert Delaunay in a traveling exhibition for Der Blaue Reiter in 1911. This helped new art ideas spread across Europe.
Later Life
Elisabeth Epstein continued her artistic journey throughout her life. She passed away on January 22, 1956, in Geneva, Switzerland. Her work helped bridge different art movements and connect artists from various countries.
