Elise McAbee Saunders (born July 28, 1920 – died May 9, 1991) was an American engineer. She specialized in materials and worked for the United States Army.

Growing Up and Her Education

Elise McAbee grew up in Orange County, New York. Her parents were Daniel Hayes McAbee and Ruth E. Edgecomb McAbee.

She went to West Virginia University. In 1942, she earned a degree in chemical engineering. This means she studied how chemicals are made and used.

Her Engineering Career

Elise McAbee worked for the Army at a place called Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. She was part of the Army's Plastics and Packaging Laboratory.

She was a materials engineer. This job involves studying and creating new materials. She worked with plastics, which are man-made materials. She also studied polymers, which are large molecules that make up plastics. Adhesives, like glues, were another area she researched.

Her work was so good that she and her team won an important award. They received the Army Research & Development Achievement Award in 1965. Her research was also published in science magazines.

Her Personal Life

In 1973, Elise McAbee married John Everitt Saunders. She passed away in 1991 in Bexar County, Texas. She was 70 years old.
