Eliud Thaddeus Williams (born 21 August 1948) is a politician from Dominica. He served as the seventh President of Dominica from 2012 to 2013.
Early Life and Education
Eliud Williams was born in Dominica in 1948. After finishing his college studies, he decided to enter the world of politics and public service. He continued his education later, earning a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of the West Indies in 1995.
Career in Public Service
Eliud Williams held many important roles in the government of Dominica. From 1985 to 1987, he worked as the Commissioner of Cooperatives. This role involved helping groups of people work together for shared benefits, like farmers sharing resources.
He then joined the civil service, which means he worked for the government in non-military jobs. He was a Permanent Secretary for different ministries. This is a senior role where you help manage a government department.
- From 1992 to 1996, he was Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health and Social Security.
- From 1996 to 2000, he served as Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment.
- During this time, he also led the government's Rural Enterprise project, which helped develop businesses in country areas.
From 2004 to 2008, Eliud Williams was the Director General of the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority. This organization helps manage phone and internet services in the Caribbean. After this, he worked for the Ministry of Communications, Works and Housing until 2008.
Becoming President of Dominica
In 2012, the President of Dominica, Nicholas Liverpool, resigned because of health issues. Eliud Williams was chosen by the Dominica Labour Party to be their candidate for the presidency.
He was elected by the Parliament on 18 September 2012. Some opposition parties did not agree with the election process. However, Eliud Williams officially became the seventh President of Dominica. He served in this important role until October 2013.
