Eliza Mazzucato Young (born July 7, 1846 – died March 27, 1937) was a talented composer, musician, and teacher. She was born in Italy but later became an American citizen. Eliza is famous for writing Mr. Sampson of Omaha in 1888. This was one of the very first operas created by a woman to be performed in the United States.

Early Life and Music Education
Eliza Mazzucato was born in Milan, Italy. Her father, Alberto Mazzucato, was a well-known opera composer. He was also the director of a famous music school, the conservatory at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
Eliza learned music from her father. She also studied music in London, England. Growing up with a famous composer as a dad helped her develop her musical talents from a young age.
A Career in Music
Eliza Mazzucato started her teaching career in London. She taught at the National Training School of Music and later at the Royal College of Music.
In 1883, she married Bicknell Young, an American singer who had been one of her students. After they married, the couple moved to the United States.
Teaching and Performing in America
In 1885, Eliza and Bicknell moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. There, they opened their own music school. They also performed together in New York City in 1886.
By 1895, the Youngs were living in Chicago. They continued to perform, travel, and teach music at the Chicago Conservatory.
Composing Operas and Songs
Eliza Mazzucato Young wrote the music for a funny opera called Mr. Sampson of Omaha. This opera was first performed in 1888. It was a big deal because it was one of the first operas by a woman to be shown in the United States. People liked the songs from the opera so much that the sheet music was printed for many years.
She also composed another short opera called The Maiden and the Reaper. Besides operas, Eliza wrote shorter pieces for singers, like a French song called "Le Roi Don Juan." She also set a Psalm 130 to music. Eliza even created special music exercises, such as "Staccato Étude in B," to help students learn.
Family Life
Eliza Mazzucato married Brigham Bicknell Young in London in 1883. Bicknell was also a musician. They had three sons: Arrigo Mazzucato Young (born in England in 1884), Hilgard Bicknell Young (born in Utah in 1885), and Umberto Young (born in Utah in 1887).
Even though her husband's family had connections to the Mormon community, Eliza and Bicknell followed the Christian Science religion from the 1890s. Eliza Mazzucato Young passed away in Beverly Hills, California in 1937, when she was 90 years old.
