Eliza's Early Life and Learning
Eliza Myrie was born in 1981. Her father worked as a stonemason. This might have given her an early interest in creating things. Eliza studied art at two great universities. She earned her first degree (BA) from Williams College. Later, she got her master's degree (MFA) from Northwestern University. She also attended special art programs. These included The Skowhegan School in 2010. She also joined The Whitney Independent Study Program from 2019 to 2020. These programs helped her grow as an artist.
Eliza's Art Career and Projects
Eliza Myrie has done many cool things in her art career. She helped start something called the Black Artists Retreat. This happened between 2013 and 2016. She worked with another artist, Theaster Gates, on this project. The retreat brought together Black artists of all ages. It was a special place for them to share ideas. It was different from traditional art museums.
In 2016, Eliza received a special award called a MacDowell fellowship. This award helps artists focus on their work. From 2017 to 2018, she had a special residency. It was called the Equal Justice Residency/Fellowship. She held it at the Santa Fe Art Institute. Eliza also works as the Wiki Project Manager at Black Lunch Table. This group helps make sure artists of color are well-represented.
