History of Elizabeth
Founding the Town
The town of Elizabeth was officially started on April 17, 1812. A man named Sheriff John Tipton was there to see it happen. The land for the town was given by Captain Jacob Zenor and his wife, Suzannah Muchendorffer Zenor. The town was named after Jacob's daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Lemmon Zenor. She was married to his son, George Zenor.
Rose Hill Cemetery
Rose Hill Cemetery is located on the west side of town. It is the second largest cemetery in Harrison County. Jacob Zenor and his wife also donated the land for this cemetery. They had one important rule: anyone could be buried there, no matter what their religion was.
Elizabeth Fire Department
The town's fire department was first set up on December 29, 1959. Their very first fire engine was bought in Corydon. It was a 1941 International Fire Truck, and it cost $200.

2010 Population Facts
In 2010, there were 162 people living in Elizabeth. These people lived in 62 households, and 44 of those were families. Most of the people living in Elizabeth (96.3%) were White. A small number were African American (1.2%), Native American (0.6%), or from other backgrounds. About 1.2% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
Many households (37.1%) had children under 18 living with them. More than half (53.2%) were married couples living together. Some households were led by a single female (9.7%) or a single male (8.1%). About 14.5% of households had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household had about 2.61 people.
The average age of people in Elizabeth was 33.9 years. About 27.2% of residents were under 18 years old. About 19.1% were 65 years or older. The town had a nearly even number of males (49.4%) and females (50.6%).
Education in Elizabeth
Early Schools
The very first school in Elizabeth was a simple, one-room log cabin. It was built around the year 1833. Later, around 1890, a college called Clay Hill College opened in downtown Elizabeth. This college offered more advanced education.
High School and New Buildings
Clay Hill College eventually moved to a different location. Around 1908, the high school took over the old college building. The first high school graduation happened on April 13, 1912. Sadly, the high school building burned down in 1935.
In 1936, Posey Township built a new brick school building. This building is still used today by a local non-profit group. Children in Elizabeth now attend South Central Jr/Sr High School and South Central Elementary. These schools serve the entire southeastern part of Harrison County.
Public Library
Elizabeth also has its own public library. It is a branch of the Harrison County Public Library system.
