Elizabeth Bowman facts for kids
Elizabeth Bowman (born around 1677, died 1707) was a talented English stage actor from the late 1600s and early 1700s. She was the daughter of Sir Francis Watson, a respected figure. When she was young, she was adopted by Thomas Betterton, who was a very famous actor and theatre manager of his time.
In 1692, Elizabeth married another actor named John Bowman. The next year, she started her own acting career at the Drury Lane theatre. She became known on stage as Mrs Bowman.
Her Acting Career
Elizabeth Bowman was part of a big theatre group called the United Company until 1695. This company was very important in London's theatre scene. After that, she joined a new group led by her adoptive father, Thomas Betterton. This new group performed at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre.
During her career, Mrs Bowman played many different roles in various plays. She was known for her performances in both funny comedies and serious dramas. She worked with famous writers like William Congreve and John Vanbrugh. She played characters such as Mrs Foresight in Love For Love and Lady Fancyfull in The Provoked Wife. She continued acting in many popular plays until her death in 1707.
