Elizabeth Eiloart (born 1827 – died 22 February 1898) was an English novelist. She wrote many books, mostly for children. She often used the pen name Mrs. C. J. Eiloart. She was also a strong supporter of women's rights and women's right to vote.
Her Life Story
Elizabeth Eiloart was born Elizabeth Darby Adams in 1827. Her birthplace was St. Pancras, London. Her father's name was Samuel Adams.
On 29 September 1849, she married Carl J. G. Eiloart. They were married at St Pancras Old Church, which became their home. Elizabeth and Carl had twelve children together. Sadly, five of their children died when they were young. The six children who survived were Edith, Ernest, Bernard, Clarence, Arnold, and Blanche. Her son, Ernest Eiloart, later wrote a book about laws affecting women in 1878.
Around 1890, Elizabeth and Carl retired. They moved to Dane Street in St Leonards-on-Sea. They lived there until Carl passed away. Elizabeth herself died on 22 February 1898 in Brighton.
Fighting for Women's Rights
Elizabeth Eiloart was a very active person. She worked hard to improve things for women. In 1858, she helped convince the Marylebone Swimming Baths to open for ladies. They set aside every Wednesday for women to swim.
She was also involved with the English Woman's Journal. This was an important magazine that discussed women's issues. Elizabeth was a shareholder, meaning she invested money in the journal. She also wrote articles for it from when it first started in 1858. In 1864, she became the editor of the journal. This meant she was in charge of what was published.
