Lady Elizabeth Fane (born Elizabeth Brydges, 1510 – 1568) was an important English writer and a supporter of other writers. She lived during a time of big changes in England, especially regarding religion.

Elizabeth Fane's Story

Elizabeth Brydges was born around 1510. Her parents were Rouland Brugge and Margery Kelom.

Marriage and Challenges

Elizabeth married a man named Ralph Vane. In 1550, the King gave them a large estate called Penshurst Place. However, their lives changed dramatically. In 1552, her husband was accused of being involved in a political plot against a powerful leader, John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. Because of this, Ralph Vane was executed.

After her husband's death, Elizabeth was in a difficult situation. Penshurst Place was taken from her and given to Sir William Sidney. Their home in Westminster was also emptied, with their belongings going to Sir John Gate, a supporter of Northumberland.

Helping Others

When Queen Mary I became queen, she arrested many Protestants. Elizabeth Fane was a brave woman who risked her own safety to help these prisoners. She offered them support and comfort during a very dangerous time.

A historian named John Strype wrote that Elizabeth Fane was a "liberal benefactor" to Protestants. This means she was very generous in helping them during Queen Mary's reign. She also wrote letters to important religious figures like Philpot and John Bradford.

Her Writings

Elizabeth Fane was also a writer. In 1550, she published a book called 12 Certaine Psalms of Godly Meditation. This book included 102 wise sayings or proverbs. It was printed by Robert Crowley, who later had to leave England because of his Protestant beliefs.

A Special Supporter

Another important writer, John Foxe, described Lady Fane as "a speciall Nourse and a great supporter" of the religious people who were imprisoned during Queen Mary's time. This shows how much she cared for and helped those who were suffering for their beliefs.

Elizabeth Fane passed away in 1568 in Holborn, London.
