Founded 1866

The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital was a special place in central London. It helped women with their health for many years. The hospital was named after Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. She was one of Britain's very first female doctors. Today, its work continues in a modern part of University College Hospital, called the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson wing.

In 1866, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson started a small clinic. It was called St Mary's Dispensary. Her father helped her with money. She worked there for over 20 years.

This clinic grew into the New Hospital for Women in 1872. It was special because it let poor women get medical help. And the doctors were all qualified women! This was very unusual back then.

In 1874, the hospital moved to Marylebone Road. Later, a new building was planned for Euston Road. The Princess of Wales laid the first stone in 1889. The architect was J. M. Brydon. Elizabeth's sister, Agnes Garrett, and her cousin, Rhoda Garrett, helped design it.

In 1918, the hospital changed its name. It became the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital. This was to honor the amazing doctor who started it all.

A Special Maternity Home

In 1946, the hospital bought a nursing home. It was located at 40 Belsize Grove. From 1948 to 1977, this place was known as the Garrett Anderson Maternity Home. It helped mothers and babies. Later, the building was taken down. New homes were built there instead.

Saving the Hospital

In the 1960s, the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in Euston Road faced a big problem. People wanted to close it down. In 1976, it was announced that it would close. But the staff didn't give up! They took over the building in November 1976. They kept fighting to keep it open until 1979.

Joining Forces for Better Care

In January 2001, the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital joined with another hospital. It was called the Obstetric Hospital. Together, they formed the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital. They moved to a new location on Huntley Street.

In November 2008, the hospital's services for pregnant women and newborns moved again. They went to a brand new building. This was the University College Hospital Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing. It cost £70 million and had the newest technology. The old building on Huntley Street was then taken down. A new cancer center, the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre, was built there. It opened in April 2012.

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Gallery

The main part of the old Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital building in Euston Road is still standing. It was built in 1890. This historic building has been fixed up. It is now part of the UNISON Centre.

Inside this building, you can visit the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Gallery. It's a special place open to everyone. The gallery tells the story of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. It also shares the history of her hospital. And it shows how women fought to become equal in medicine. It covers social history from the 1800s and 1900s.

You can use interactive displays to learn more. You'll discover "Enterprising Women" who followed Elizabeth into medicine. You'll also learn about women who made a difference in other parts of British public life.
