Elizabeth Gooch facts for kids
Elizabeth Sarah Gooch (born June 27, 1757 – died June 1807) was an English writer. She wrote many books, including novels and a memoir about her own life.
Her Life Story
Elizabeth Sarah Villa-Real was born in Edwinstowe. Her father was William Villa-Real. When her father passed away, Elizabeth received a large amount of money, known as an inheritance.
In 1775, her mother arranged for her to marry William Gooch. Elizabeth didn't realize at the time that she was financially independent because of her inheritance. Her husband took control of her money. He later left her in Lille in 1778.
Her Career and Writings
For a while, Elizabeth worked as an actress with a theater group in Portsmouth. She also began her career as a writer.
By 1788, she published a book called An Appeal to the Public. She faced financial difficulties around this time. In 1792, she shared her own life story in a memoir titled The Life of Mrs. Gooch.
Elizabeth continued to write many books. She published a collection of poems. She also wrote several novels, which are fictional stories. Some of her novels include:
- The Contrast (published in 1795)
- Fancied Events (published in 1799)
- Truth and Fiction (published in 1801)
- Sherwood Forest (published in 1804)
- Can We Doubt It (published in 1806)
Elizabeth Sarah Gooch passed away in Plymouth in 1807.
