Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elizabeth Knepp (died 1681) was a talented British actress, singer, and dancer. She was active in the 1600s, a time when theater was becoming very popular in England. Her first known role was in 1664, when she was chosen by Thomas Killigrew to play Lusetta in his play Thomaso. This suggests she was already part of his acting group, the King's Company, around that time.

Her Amazing Acting Career

From 1666 onwards, Elizabeth Knepp played many different characters. She performed in both serious (tragic) and funny (comic) plays. One of her most famous roles was Lady Fidget in William Wycherley's play The Country Wife.

Breaking New Ground

In 1664, Elizabeth Knepp made history. She was the first woman to play the main character in Jonson's play Epicoene. This was a big deal because, before this time, men often played female roles.

More Than Just Acting

Elizabeth Knepp was a versatile performer. Besides acting, she sometimes spoke the prologues (introductions) and epilogues (conclusions) for plays. She was also known for her dancing and singing, often performing these talents during or between the acts of a play.

What Samuel Pepys Wrote

Samuel Pepys was a famous diarist who lived at the same time as Elizabeth Knepp. He was very interested in her. His diary, which he wrote between 1666 and 1668, mentions her many times. Pepys often wrote about how much he enjoyed her singing.

Her Later Life

Elizabeth Knepp continued to perform for many years. She passed away in 1681.
