Elizabeth Joyce Rivers (born August 5, 1903 – died July 20, 1964) was an English artist. She was a painter, engraver, and illustrator. She also wrote books. Elizabeth Rivers lived in Ireland for most of her life.

Life Story

Elizabeth Rivers was born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England, on August 5, 1903. She came from the family of a famous plant grower, Thomas Rivers.

Elizabeth studied art at Goldsmiths' College in London. She then won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools. There, she learned from well-known artists like Walter Sickert. In 1931, she moved to Paris, France. She continued her art education there, learning about fresco painting (large wall paintings).

In 1935, Elizabeth visited Ireland for the first time. She went to Inis Mór, one of the Aran Islands, with a friend. She loved the island so much that she lived there from 1936 to 1943. While on the Aran Islands, she wrote her first book, This Man, which was published in 1939. She also wrote another book called Stranger in Aran, published in 1946.

Elizabeth Rivers lived in Ireland for most of her life, except for a short time during World War II. During the war, she lived in London. She worked as a fire warden during the Blitz, helping to protect buildings from bombs. She also worked with another artist, Evie Hone, on designs for stained glass windows.
